Mercedes Power Steering Fluid Service

Of all the filters on the Mercedes auto, this is the most neglected.  Most people are not even aware that Mercedes used a power steering filter.  So lets get that system whipped into shape with a new filter.

Safety and security tips:

Please remember to recycle all your used fluids at an appropriate recycling center.  Be mindful to not spill or splash fluids on yourself, others or the ground.  Also as a safety tip please remember anytime you are working on, around or under your car, to wear safety glasses and secure the car with wheel stops and approved jack stands!

The filter is small of stature and easy to change.  The tall canister to the right is my "secret weapon"  It is the Mighty Mite fluid evacuator, and will pay for itself in short order.  It will vacuum any liquid, and I have done just about all of them with this unit.  You don't need this to do the job, a turkey baster will work in a pinch.  Just remember to never use it for food again, if you use the turkey baster.

Remove the top cover by twisting the rubber coated nut.

Take off the top and give it a good cleaning before you re-install it.

Remove the fluid from the pump.

Remove the securing nut.  There is a strong spring under the yellow plastic piece pushing up, so you will have to depress the plastic housing with your other hand while you are removing the nut.

Here is the assembly after the nut is removed.

Needle nose pliers to remove the filter.

This is what it looks like without the filter.  Clean that junk up with a clean paper towel.

New filter going in.  Make sure to NOT put it in upside down.  The seven holes will face up.

Properly installed filter.

Spring assembly and nut back on.  The purpose of the spring is to create some upward force against the cap to lessen the chance of the cap coming off due to engine vibration.  So when you go to put the cap back on, you should have to push down on the cap about 1/4 inch before it makes contact with the pump , due to the spring pressure.  If you tighten the nut down too far on the spring assembly, then the cap will not be under any pressure.  Bottom line is don't over tighten the nut and spring assembly.  I have about 1/2 inch of thread showing here which is about right.

Refill with nice clean ATF Dextron fluid.  You can use Mercedes Power steering fluid, but ATF fluid is also a recommended fluid.
